The Branch Controller (Ekiti) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, has assured that the nationwide strike declared by organized labor, set to begin on Monday, June 3, will not disrupt examinations across the country. This assurance was detailed in a letter sent to principals and school proprietors in Ekiti State, as reported by The Nation on Saturday, June 1. The letter, titled “Notice of Commencement of Indefinite Strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC)” with reference number EK/BC/SC/EXAM/07/Vol.1/89, was issued late Friday.

Mrs. Lawson emphasized that while WAEC understands the concerns of the labor unions, it is crucial that students do not suffer by missing their ongoing examinations in Nigeria and other West African states. The letter reads: “The attention of Management has been drawn to a notice of the Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC effective Monday, 3rd June 2024. Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled.”

The 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which began on Tuesday, April 30, is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
