Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, hinted on Monday at a potential review of the age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions in the country.

Setting 18 years as the benchmark for admission into universities, the minister advised parents against pushing their underage wards into higher education, especially university education, before the age of 18.

Prof. Mamman made these remarks to newsmen after monitoring the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in some centers in Abuja.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the age of some candidates applying to write the examination, he noted that they were still below the required age for admission into universities.

However, he commended the conduct of the examination, describing it as peaceful, and stated that irregularities that were noticeable in the past had drastically reduced.
