The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has awarded scholarships to 30 indigent but brilliant students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra, to support their studies at the university. The beneficiaries, who are all undergraduates, include one student living with disabilities, and are at various levels and studying different courses.

During a ceremony at the ASUU-UNIZIK conference hall, the branch Chairman, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, announced that each student would receive a scholarship of fifty thousand naira (N50,000). The selection process was based on applications and interviews to ensure the awardees truly deserved the support.

The scholarship program is a directive from ASUU's national body aimed at alleviating the financial burden of deserving but financially disadvantaged students in public universities nationwide. Additionally, the national body is awarding scholarships of two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) each to two indigent students from Unizik.

Prof. Ubaoji emphasized that ASUU's role is not only to engage in strikes but also to assist intelligent students from underprivileged backgrounds in achieving their professional dreams. He revealed that over one hundred students applied for the scholarship, but only thirty were selected. The union plans to make this scholarship program a quarterly initiative to continually support and encourage students.

Ubaoji urged the students to use the scholarship funds wisely, investing in legitimate businesses that will generate future revenue for them.
