Gov Lawal secures release of withheld WAEC results of Zamfara students

Feb 17, 2024  WAEC

Governor Dauda Lawal has successfully intervened to secure the release of Zamfara State students' results, which were earlier withheld by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The results were withheld due to the non-payment of N1.4 billion examination fees owed by the state's previous administrations. This development was confirmed in a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris.

According to the statement, WAEC officials, including the Chairman of the Administrative and Finance Committee of WAEC Nigeria, Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, and the Head of the National Office Nigeria, Dr. Amos J. Dangut, met with the Governor in his Abuja office. During the meeting, both parties agreed on a plan to settle the backlog of debt.

Present at the meeting were senior officials of WAEC Nigeria, including Mr. Ambrose Okelezo, the Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Victor C. Odu, the Director of Finance, and Mr. Segun U. Jerumeh, the Deputy Director.

The statement highlighted Governor Lawal's commitment to addressing the state of emergency declared in education, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that Zamfara students are not deprived of participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme due to the non-release of their results.

As a result of the intervention, WAEC has agreed to release the previous results and allow Zamfara students to participate in the 2024 WAEC examinations. A payment plan for the backlog of the debt has been agreed upon, and the withheld results are expected to be released before the end of the month.
