The Federal Government of Nigeria has clarified that students registering for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) can freely select subjects across all streams, including science, arts, and social sciences, under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum. This clarification, announced by the Federal Ministry of Education on December 6, 2025, addresses widespread confusion about subject restrictions under the new framework. The Ministry stated that there are no exclusions or restrictions on any approved subject, allowing a science student to select subjects classified under social sciences or arts, and vice versa. This flexibility is intended to make the curriculum student-centered and supportive of diverse academic interests and career paths, provided that subject choices are properly guided by school authorities, parents, or certified school counsellors.
In addition to the subject choice clarification, the ministry provided further details on curriculum changes. The subject formerly known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been renamed Digital Technology, with the content remaining unaffected; students who previously studied ICT are eligible to register for Digital Technology. Regarding trade subjects, six courses have been identified and approved. While a student may register for any of these subjects if the school offers them and they have been taught, there is no obligation for a student to register for a trade subject if they have not been exposed to or offered any of the six courses. These updates follow the comprehensive review of the national curriculum, completed in August 2025, aimed at reducing content overload and equipping Nigerian students with skills relevant to today's global demands.
