The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) concluded its annual secondary schools essay and debate competition, celebrating students who showcased a deep understanding of the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics on Nigeria's future. Rhoda Aluko of Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, emerged as the overall winner in the debate segment, which specifically examined the positive and negative implications of AI on the nation’s job market. The winners and their schools received various prizes, including cash awards, laptops, and smartwatches.
LCCI leadership affirmed the Chamber's commitment to education, describing the competition as a vital platform to inspire critical thinking and innovation and to strengthen partnerships that expose students to entrepreneurship and digital literacy. The selection process was stringent; out of 234 entries submitted, 150 were disqualified for exceeding the 20% ethical-use threshold for AI assistance, underscoring the focus on originality and analytical strength. The Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology encouraged the finalists to advance beyond theoretical discussions by developing practical, AI-driven solutions for community challenges.
